ADDICTED TO READING? ME?

In May, 2014, I started a personal project that I had wanted to do for a long time. I decided to read Agatha Christie's whole body of work. Believe it or not, I finished in January 2015. Now I read a lot and pretty fast, but this woman wrote for AGES. She was born in the late 1800s, and died in the mid-1900s, and she wrote all the time. And the variety! I had read several of her most famous Poirot and Miss Marple books, so I was incredibly surprised to find horror stories, spy stories, about WW I, WWII, the cold war. And it was almost like a history lesson. As I read the books I could see the changes in expressions, language itself, and description of clothes. I strongly recommend trying this out, it was a great experience.

THE TURTLE MOVES

Today is a very sad day. Terry Pratchett became one of my favorite authors when I read Wyrd Sisters. Granny Weatherwax is one of the best witchy characters I have read, and I have not read few. Her idea of headology instead of magic was magnificent. Pratchett created not just really good characters, but a world, a whole universe with its own laws of physics, with its magic, a new color, and even a concept of libraries than any bibliophile finds very logical. All the characters are very human, with their flaws, and their hobbies, all recognizable and therefore easy to love. He leaves behind a huge legacy of 70 books, but I know that for many, like me, it won’t be enough. " DON’T THINK OF IT AS DYING, said Death. JUST THINK OF IT AS LEAVING EARLY TO AVOID THE RUSH".

SINS OF MY MOTHER... LANGUAGE

We all commit sins against the language, be it English, Spanish, whatever.  We ignore grammatical rules; we use wrong concepts, oxymorons, etc. I commit two major sins against the English language. One is alliteration. I tend to repeat words, never using synonyms. It can be very tiring to read, so I always try to reread everything I write, and correct it afterwards. Always proofread everything you write! It’s important! My other sin is a kind of egocentrism. Basically I start too many sentences with I, me, mine, etc. There are other ways of expressing a sentence without sounding big-headed, but there you are.

A sin I notice constantly with Spanish students is the over use of the word TO. Since we use TO to conjugate verbs, Spanish students use it when using that verb. It’s not only unnecessary, sometimes it’s incorrect.

Here is a list of common grammar mistakes that my mother gave me; it’s very interesting and useful.

What are your sins?

Hello everybody!
In addition to the existing Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/EnglishAtHomeVillalba, I wanted to create a blog where I could write articles on the English language, tell anecdotes about my experience as a teacher, and continue to try and make English easier for all.
We will talk about common mistakes, I'll share videos, articles I find could be interesting or useful, and in general, extend the information that you can see on our Facebook.
I will also post your articles. Send them through the Facebook page as a private message, and as long as it's not spam, and it's in some way about English, or teaching in general, I'll post it here under your name.
Welcome to English At Home, and thank you for reading!
